A Bar Wall of Beer: Unsure If Any Were Gluten-Free
The Founder’s Hall is a large bar in Albert Square, where the number of beers on tap stands out as soon as you walk in. A whole wall of the bar displays every beer they have. (Although not very useful for coeliacs). I should have asked if they do any gluten-free beers, as when you see as many options as that, there is always hope for one of them to not contain gluten. But anyway, I was not feeling up for a drink at that time.
The Menu Lacking Many Gluten-Free Options: Fish And Chips Can’t Hurt Though
Unfortunately, the menu didn’t have many gluten-free options. There were a few small plates which were gluten-free, including the chips and halloumi fries. But for the mains, it was mostly a burger (with no bun) or the fish and chips.
Personally, I am always happy with fish and chips. So it was not a problem. Although, I did fancy a lighter meal, so I’d have preferred a filling salad or sandwich. But fish and chips were still fine.
A Flakey Batter But Perfectly Cooked Chips
You know when chips are that right amount of chunky and cooked?
So soft in the middle but they have a good crunch to their skin. These chips were like that. They were nice. Really nice.
The fish was …okay. Not as good as the chips. I want to blame the gluten-free batter though. As the actual white fish was tasty. But the batter was very flakey. It fell apart when you cut into it. However nothing like a bit of tartar sauce can’t hide!
The mushy peas were also really nice. It all went well together and were a good all round meal.
